How to Care for Your Custom Wood Cabinets — Tips from Bear Cabinetry

Bear Cabinetry·5 min read

Custom wood cabinets are a long-term investment. With proper care, they'll look great and function perfectly for twenty to thirty years. With neglect, they can show wear in five. Here's how to care for custom wood cabinets the right way, based on what we've seen in thousands of Northeast Ohio kitchens over nearly five decades.

Daily Cleaning: Less Is More

The most important rule for custom wood cabinet care is to avoid excess moisture. Water is wood's enemy. Wipe spills immediately with a dry or barely damp cloth. Never let water sit on cabinet surfaces, especially around the sink.

For routine cleaning, a soft cloth dampened with warm water is sufficient for most surfaces. Dry immediately after wiping — don't let moisture linger.

What Cleaners to Use (and Avoid)

Use mild dish soap diluted in water for grease and food residue. Apply with a soft cloth, wipe clean, and dry immediately.

Avoid: bleach-based cleaners, ammonia-based cleaners (including many glass cleaners), abrasive scrubbers, and steam cleaners. These strip finishes, raise wood grain, and cause premature aging.

Also avoid: silicone-based furniture polishes. They build up over time and create a hazy film that's difficult to remove.

Handling Grease Buildup

Grease accumulates on cabinet surfaces near the stove over time, even with a good range hood. A solution of equal parts white vinegar and warm water cuts through grease effectively without damaging the finish. Apply with a soft cloth, let sit for 30 seconds, wipe clean, and dry.

For heavy buildup, a small amount of dish soap added to the vinegar solution increases cutting power. Test in an inconspicuous area first.

Protecting the Finish

Most custom wood cabinets have a catalyzed lacquer or conversion varnish finish that is durable and low-maintenance. A light application of furniture wax (not silicone-based) once or twice a year helps protect the finish and maintain the sheen.

Keep cabinet doors and drawers from slamming — if you don't have soft-close hardware, consider adding it. Repeated impact damages hinges and loosens door mounting points over time.

Humidity and Temperature

Wood expands and contracts with changes in humidity. In Northeast Ohio, where summers are humid and winters are dry, this is a real consideration. Maintaining indoor humidity between 35% and 55% year-round minimizes wood movement and prevents warping or cracking.

A whole-house humidifier in winter and air conditioning in summer go a long way toward protecting your cabinet investment.

When to Call for Service

If hinges become loose, doors go out of alignment, or drawer slides start sticking, address it promptly. Minor adjustments are simple and prevent larger problems. Bear Cabinetry stands behind our installations — if something isn't right, call us.
